The Art of Clinical Supervision (The Basics)

The University of Ottawa belongs to a group called the "Consortium national de formation en santé" (CNFS) made up of other Francophone colleges and universities from across Canada. The mandate of this national consortium for health training in French is to provide Francophones with improved access to post-secondary education in French in health-related disciplines.

Over the years, the Centre for Innovative Pedagogies and Digital Learning (CIPDL) has developed a variety of online workshops or the CNFS. The workshops are aimed at health-care professionals across Canada who want to improve their supervision/preceptor skills in French.

The first series of five workshops make up the core of the program in supervision:

A. Principes de base de la supervision (Basic Principles of Supervision)
B. Intégrer les styles d'apprentissage (Integrating Learning Styles)
C. Bâtir un climat de confiance (Creating/Building a Climate of Confidence??)
D. Évaluer le rendement (Evaluating Productivity??)
E. Gérer les conflits (Managing Conflict)

A second series of workshops allows participants to go into more detail on specific aspects of supervision.

Instructional Challenge/Approach:

Challenge: All of the workshops are offered completely online to health-care professionals across Canada who have very different work schedules. Additional challenges included multiple time zones and remote areas without high-speed Internet access. To overcome these challenges, asynchronous communication tools were chosen as well as multimedia that could meet dial-up access requirements.

Approach: A modular approach was chosen to address the time management issues these health-care professionals face. They are stand-alone units which combine elements of constructivism and behaviorism.
